Where to See Animals (in Person and Online) in the Quinte Region
Learning about animals, listening to the sounds they make and watching how they move is a great way to spend time with your kids. While there are no zoos in the immediate vicinity, there are few petting zoos that are within a reasonable driving distance from Belleville and the Quinte area (for when the province of Ontario is out of the stay-at-home order). Zoos, Petting Farms and Aquariums for Kids near Belleville and Quinte West
Looking to bring your little ones to visit some animals? Here are a few options that are within reasonable driving distance from Belleville and Quinte West.
- Not quite a zoo, The Big Apple in Colborne, ON has a cute little petting zoo that is perfect for younger kids. While you’re there, you can also browse through their store for pastries, pies, jams and unique gifts. The tentative opening date for the petting zoo is scheduled for the May long weekend.
- If your child is into cats, big or small, bring them to Jungle Cat World located in Orono, ON. But don’t let the name fool you because they also house birds, monkeys, lemurs and other furry animals!
- Little marine biologists will have a blast at Brockville, ON’s Aquatarium where you can find an abundance of different marine life as well as beavers, otters and even reptiles! In addition, come experience the interactive Aquatarium Green Screen and become a reporter for the day or head on over to the Boat House & Skiff House and try rowing a boat in the simulators. There is so much more that they offer, you might need to come back for another day!
- If cute, furry Alpacas are what you’re looking for, swing by Napanee, ON and visit Hickory Lanes Alpacas. Get up close to one of these friendly animals and feel how soft their fur is! They also have pigs, goats, chickens and all sorts of farm animals!
- Swing by The Land O’ Lakes Rescue Petting Farm located in Cloyne, ON and give some much needed tlc’s to these injured, sick or abandoned farm animals. A pet or a cuddle helps these animals’ road to recovery and teaches your child empathy along the way.
- Visit Waupoos Estates Winery in Picton, ON for a fun filled day for both you and your children. In addition to wine tastings and tours, this unique winery has a restaurant, cider house, a restored century old home for overnight guests as well as an outdoor pen where you can see their farm animals! You’ll surely find something to entertain every family member!
- Check out Canada’s Dinosaur Park which is also a sanctuary for abandoned reptiles with over 200 turtles, snakes, lizards, alligators, and crocodiles. Located in Indian River near Peterborough, this dinosaur park and reptile sanctuary is Canada’s only registered non-profit reptile sanctuary. Visitors have the choice of touring the Dinosaur Park via drive-thru or walking path.
